In-display fingerprint technology is cool and accessible all but only on comparatively costly OLED panels handsets. At the end of 2019 Chinese company BOE will launch Mass produces cheap finger print LCD panels.
BOE has shown that the fingerprint in-display optical scanner has been effectively introduced in the standard LCD panel.
For the lower- and mid-range market segment, this is a major advance since the nature of LCD panels has not allowed fingerprint scanners to remain below.
The primary obstacles to overcome were extra backlight layer and the fact that it is usually more thick than OLED.
In 2018, about 85% of the total 1.456 billions of smartphones that have been shipped using LCD panels, according to industry analysts. The trend is slowly moving towards OLEDs, of course, but there is still a long way to go.
Fortsense and AU Optronics have been previously verified to work on an LCD with the following FP scanner, but BOE will begin mass-production in-display-compatible LCDs by the end of 2019, so it will end up in 2020 for the lower-end market.
